2016 was the year that the world delved deeper into the Artificial Intelligence (AI) sector. Different industries within the AI field started conducting in-depth research to explore new opportunities, venture capital firms raced to pour funds into the AI space, and governments in many countries including China and the United States began laying the preparatory framework so as to gain a strategic high ground when the AI wave hits. 

According to statistics compiled by multiple research agencies for the “2016 China Artificial Intelligence Industry Development Report”, the market size for the global AI industry at the end of the year was estimated to have exceeded US$10 billion, out of which the Chinese AI market was estimated to make up around US$1.5 billion. And the industry shows no signs of slowing down. The global AI market is expected to grow exponentially to hit an estimated US$200 billion by 2020. Has the future of AI arrived?

Institutions predict that investments into the AI sector will jump by more than 300% in 2017. AI technologies such as Speech Recognition, Image Recognition, Natural Language Processing and Deep Learning will develop so rapidly that they will soon be as pervasive and essential to our daily lives as air and water. In 2017, AI will have a far-reaching impact on the innovation of various science and technology industries around the world. It will continue to revolutionize the dynamics between consumers, businesses and machines, and drive the growth and innovation of the technology sector. What kind of storm will AI set off in the near future? 

Many foreign investment firms and entrepreneurs have their eyes set on the enormous market in China, and are ready to fight for their slice of the Chinese AI pie. Entrepreneurship requires both risk and courage and Shanghai, once dubbed the “playground for risk-takers”, is poised to be the entrepreneurial hub of China. Will it be able to make use of its strategic position to effectively connect local and foreign players, and be the global stage for entrepreneurship? 

In this new year, we will launch discussions revolving around three topics: global innovation hotspots, the AI industry and the development of its innovation ecosystem. Through this, we hope to kickstart a year of innovation and investment that will lay the foundation for long-term development.
